The Role

    • Handle food in a safe and compliant manner. Follow recipes and prepare/cook food to the highest standards. Prepare ready-to-eat and pre-made foods to sell in the café. Monitor quality control of each food item throughout preparation and service. 
    • Execute seasonal recipes correctly and consistently.
    • Must have strong knife skills and be familiar with efficient mise en place organization in the kitchen.
    • Maintaining an efficient dish pit and clean kitchen, up to par with food safety standards.  
    • Opportunity for recipe development and creation using seasonal, local ingredients from our amazing farms.
    • Team collaboration on events, new menu items, and building the market & cafe community. 
    • Event Preparation and Service: Support logistics for Local Roots events and catering services. Lead the team in food preparation, service, and presentation. 
    • Recipe development: This job has an opportunity to help develop new recipes for our menu

    • Organized and highly communicative - you keep your work space organized and you communicate ideas for kitchen improvement 
    • Can routinely lift and carry 50lb boxes and able to work on your feet
    • At least 6+ months proven experience working quickly in a commercial kitchen/restaurant/culinary experience required
    • Experience with food prep, knife skills, following recipes
    • NY Food Handlers card or ServSafe food handlers certification required

Hours, Availability, and Compensation

      • Prep Cook: Part Time - 3-4 x 8 hour shifts a week, must be able to work Sunday
      • This position is paid hourly, earns up to 40 hours annually accrued PTO (after 120 day of employment) and receives cash and square tips.

      • We’re looking for a dynamic, hard-working team player who can be part of our opening team at our new Manhattan kiosk. You will mostly be working independently. This position focuses on customer service, education, counter service, assistance in event execution, and drink and food preparation.

        The Role
        • Customer Service: Work the front counter and ring up orders using Square POS systems. Prepare coffee, tea, and mixed drinks, and serve pastries and plate hot dishes. Provide excellent customer service and foster a sense of community among guests.
        • Food Preparation: Receive and process deliveries. Handle food in a safe and compliant manner. Replenish any prepped food in the line kitchen for service. Your time will be spent mostly at the Manhattan location and possibly at our Brooklyn location. At our Manhattan location, you will be responsible for ensuring cleanliness and organization of the space + small kiosk kitchen, taking orders and plating dishes. You will work mostly independently at this location.
        • Open + Close: You will be responsible for opening or closing duties for the kiosk

        • Punctual, reliable and responsive: You are a self starter and a real team player. You're eager to step in and help with any part of the diverse projects and tasks that come up as part of a small, lean business.
        • Empathetic and outgoing with strong communication skills: Able to represent Local Roots as a thoughtful and passionate advocate for local farmers and fellow New Yorkers - you are committed to learning the ins-and-outs of the Local Roots mission and share it with the community. Your friendly personality can offer food and drink suggestions to customers. 
        • Versatile and flexible - comfortable with multi-tasking across a variety of detailed tasks at once and able to maintain a calm demeanor even during busy times
        • Able to routinely lift and carry 50lb boxes
        • Able to work on your feet while on-shift
        • 3+ months minimum prior kitchen, culinary, or retail experience required***
        • Food handlers license

        Hours, Availability, and Compensation
        • This can be a full time or part time position
        • Shifts are 6-8hrs per day
        • Our Brooklyn location is a possibility for part time employment and located in Carroll Gardens. This position will most likely be in our Manhattan location is in Midtown.
        • The Manhattan position is paid hourly ($18) and receives tips
        • Restaurant, hospitality, food service, customer service, or grocery experience required
        • New York Food Handlers card or ServSafe food handlers certification required. If you are only interested in working FOH in our Brooklyn location, a food handlers license is not required.
